Cathedral City High School

Julie Rupp, Hospitality Occupations Instructor for Riverside County’s Career Technical Education/ Regional Occupational Program teaches at Cathedral City High School. She approached SFDC and asked for help in building a new garden at the high school. She envisioned a garden program that would bring students, parents, educators and the community together. She wants to teach where healthy food is grown; that food should be a delight to make, cook and eat; and that gardening is an enjoyable hobby.

Even though SFDC had already funded one garden in 2011, Julie’s energy motivated us to help bring the resources together to build a garden which would include three 4’x8’ raised beds with Jeff Thornhill's clever cages to deter squirrels, automatic irrigation and sufficient tools. She had already chosen a site that is close to her classroom and provides good visibility to visitors and students. The school’s administration had also been educated about her program and supported it wholeheartedly. Funding was primarily provided by Desert Healthcare District along with contributions by SFDC and Walgreen’s. The garden was completed just in time to get a small crop of lettuce and cabbage before the school closed for the summer. We are hoping that over the summer tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, eggplant and pumpkins seedlings that were recently planted will be ready for the students return.

We are looking forward to the fall of 2011 when additional new crops can be planted and the cooking can begin!
