Palm Springs High School

Stephen Smith, French teacher at Palm Springs High School, had a vision of a school garden on a piece of land nearly outside the door of his classroom. A regular at the Palm Springs Certified Farmers Market, Stephen spoke with the Market Manager, Paul Palodichuk, about his ideas. Shortly thereafter Paul had arranged a meeting with Stephen, Ricky Wright, PSHS principal, and leaders of two local nonprofits, Slow Food Desert Cities and Les Dames d'Escoffier. During the planning stage, the City of Palm Springs created a Schools and Sustainability Partnership Garden Grant program to help fund school gardens. Les Dames d'Escoffier and Slow Food Desert Cities each donated $2,000, and the school applied to the City for a grant of $2,000. In May of 2010 the City awarded the grant to the school. The High School students formed the Organic Garden Club to operate the garden. The donation and grant money enabled the school to install an automatic irrigation system, construct five raised planting beds and plant a pecan and cherry orchard.
